Celebrating 40 Years of CAF!

Since 1986, we’ve walked with God, serving Wits and communities far beyond.

Our Brief History

Founded in 1986, the Christian Action Fellowship (CAF) emerged during a time of intense political and social unrest in South Africa. Then, universities were not just centers of learning, they were arenas in which state power and student resistance intersected - where teargas, sirens, and continual police surveillance disrupted the rhythms of academic life. Within this environment, students were faced with a stark choice: assuming the position of a “comrade,” aligned with secular revolutionary politics, or the “believer,” associated with political withdrawal and spiritual inwardness; thus framing a construct that faith and political liberation were mutually exclusive.

CAF arose in direct response to this false dichotomy. Grounded in biblical belief and attentive to the material and political realities of apartheid, CAF articulated a praxis-oriented Christianity that integrated faith with social responsibility, while maintaining a commitment to academic excellence. From its inception, CAF sought to form students who were spiritually rooted, intellectually engaged, and socially responsive.

Over the years, CAF has nurtured leaders who have gone on to make meaningful contributions in government, academia, and Christian ministry. Today, CAF continues to serve as a vital presence on campus, shaping lives through a faith that flows outward—into thoughtful action, ethical leadership, and compassionate engagement with the world.
